Back to Boating I Back
to Wooden Boats I Back to
Readers Stories
Thursday
we packed up the boats and caravans and travelled from Wentworth
N.S.W. to Cobdogla S.A.
We
booked into the caravan park which is a credit to the owners, had
some lunch before we launched the boats down stream at the old
Kingston punt ramps.
After
travelling down stream in the Murray to the entrance of Chambers
creek we entered slowed right down and cruised up the very windy
and narrow creek.
What
a trip it is like travelling through the everglades.
It
is hard to find where the actual creek is in parts and we had to
be on full alert all the time as there are lots big logs, stumps
and mud banks all the way.
Although
it is marked all the way but it still is a challenge to keep in
the creek as it doubles back on itself and winds through amazing
swamps and red gum forests, there was a lot of the small water
weed that grows and floats on top of the water it was like cutting
through a red and green carpet.
There
again was a lot of wild life and we only came across one other
family camped about half way through the trip.
It
took us two hours to travel the creek before we went under the
bridge on the Main road that goes from Barmera to Morgan.
We
travelled out into Lake Bonney where we could see Barmera but we
felt that we did really not have time to go there as well so we
pulled into the shore to have a bit to eat and a walk around for a
while as we refuelled and serviced the boats.
It
was amazing as we travelled back it was as though we where on a
different trip as we could not pick any of the marks that we
followed up and we hit some great mud banks and passed over some
huge logs or as we told the kids crocks.
After
two hours we arrived back in the Murray and travelled up to the
punt ramp where Betty and Tamara with the kids decided to take the
cars back to Cobdogla while Mark in the tinny and Belinda and I in
the Putt Putt would travel under the Kingston bridge and motor
back up stream to the boat ramp at the caravan park.
It
was just dark when we arrived back to load the boats what a magic
time of day to cruise up the river and see everything settling
down for the night.
