What's Underneath
a Houseboat?

Ever wondered how houseboats float or where the sewerage goes?

Houseboats on the Murray River Need to be surveyed
by the local governing authority to ensure they meet
environmental regulations and strict safety guidelines.

Boats must be surveyed each couple of years and inspected.

The boats are supported on 2 (or 3) large pontoons which are generally
made of steel or aluminium. They are extremely strong and you would
need to hit something very hard and fast to make even a small dent.

Septic goes into a holding tank (Left) which is hung under
the floor of the boat. This can be pumped out if full or
upon the hirers return. Fuel tanks (Right) are very
large and it is unlikely you will need to refuel or
empty septic on a normal trip.
