From photo to painting
Generally John can work from photos, one of which should basically capture the scene as desired. Then, support photos may be sent to show extra details and information of the boat, to help John more accurately create the desired image. Please indicate clearly which photo is the main photo, and which are support photos. Photos can easily be returned. It is important to understand that an oil painting is more than a photo. It is an artist's interpretation of a scene, using "artistic licence" to define or highlight certain aspects, which will create a unique original work of art.

Sizes and prices
Firstly think about your wall space and consider whether landscape "Landscape" or portrait "Portrait" is more suitable for the scene and space. Three standard sizes can be produced and delivered Australia-wide:

  • Medium:- Painting measures 50 x 35cm, when framed approx. 73 x 58cm, price $480.00AU
  • Large:- Painting measures 70 x 48cm, when framed approx. 94 x 73cm, price $650.00AU
  • Extra large:- Painting measures 96 x 67cm, when framed approx. 123 x 94cm, price $850.00AU
  • Note: non standard size paintings can easily be negotiated.

Procedure and timing
John can commence a commissioned work once he has a set of photos, specific details of your needs, and a commencement fee of $100. A commissioned painting usually takes about 4 weeks to complete. The process involves preliminary sketches, colour study, assessment of composition and painting approach. Then a careful drawing up of the marine scene is made. The actual painting process can take 1- 2 weeks depending on technique and the need for drying time. Once dry, John will contact you to update you with progress, before discussing with his framer the most complimentary finish for the piece. Framing generally takes one week.

FramingJohn N Pearson original
A frame needs to compliment the painting first, but also with consideration for decor tones. John's pieces are framed under glass to both protect the painting, and very importantly, to add depth and reflective qualities to the water in marine scenes. The completed framed painting is photographed, and a copy promptly sent to you, for your appraisal.
