The shape of our State will change forever when flooding of a massive man-made canyon spanning 7.2 hectares begins tomorrow at The Marina Hindmarsh Island.

Over the past eight months, more than 250,000 cubic metres of sand and rock has been excavated to create the largest fresh water marina in the Southern Hemisphere on Hindmarsh Island near the mouth of the River Murray.

Marina developer Mr Andrew Chapman says once pumps are switched off tomorrow it will take almost two weeks and 187 million litres of water to flood the area and form the centrepiece of the $ 250 million residential development.

"We are finally seeing our dreams come true," said Mr Chapman.

"This lagoon will transform Hindmarsh Island, providing space for more than 100 boat berths and an additional 100 rare waterfront allotments – and this is just the beginning.

"The Hindmarsh Island Bridge – partially funded by this project - is expected to open in January, making it even easier for holiday makers and residents to travel to and enjoy this idyllic and long overlooked part of South Australia."

The Marina Hindmarsh Island development, which is expected to take another 7 years to complete, will eventually boast more than 900 luxury properties, outstanding facilities and services, 1,100 berths and 40 hectares of freshwater waterways.

Mr Chapman said housing allotments released as part of the current stage of the marina development just 4months ago was already almost 75 percent sold with people eager to buy their own island getaway before an expected jump in land prices with the opening of the Hindmarsh Island bridge.

"The Marina offers an incomparably perfect lifestyle that will attract attention from around the world especially from boating and fishing enthusiasts.

"There is nowhere else that has Australia’s largest freshwater playground right on its doorstep and access to the sea via the breath-taking natural scenery of the Coorong."
