LET
THE CELEBRATION’S BEGIN 31 December 2000
The
paddlers will have a lot to celebrate this New Years Eve as the Red
Cross-Herald Sun Murray Marathon 2000 ends and the New Year begins. There
was excitement and emotion along the banks of the Murray as spectators sat
in awe to witness the paddlers crossing the finish line in Swan Hill.
First
home with line honours were Rob Clarke and Tony Bond in the C2 / MV40.
They crossed the line at 12.50pm, beating the existing record set in 1992
by 17minutes. Five minutes behind them were Robby Loader and partner Tony
Barthelson who also competed in the C2 / MV40. It was no surprise that
Anthony May and Michael Leveritt crossed the finish line first in the K2 /
MO class after they led throughout the Marathon. Tim
Naughtin drew a cheer from the crowd as he flew around the bend securing
first place in the K1 / MO division. This was a tremendous achievement for
Tim who broke his neck 18 months prior to the marathon while in training.
“It was my goal to get back on my feet and into shape by the Murray
Marathon 2000. It is an incredible feeling to cross the finish line,” he
said. Aside from overcoming this potentially life-threatening accident, Tim ripped the rudder from his kayak after getting caught in a violent eddy, ten kilometres from Checkpoint Charlie. He managed to steer the remaining distance to the checkpoint but lost valuable time as his landcrew replaced the kayak. Once back on the water Tim made up for lost time to regain his previous lead, and hold his unassailable position.
