Media Release

1.6.2009

Discover Murray mobileThe largest Murray River web site in the world, Discover Murray River has launched one of Australia’s first tourism specific mobile phone and devices web site. It provides instant and easily accessible information about where to stay and what to do along the whole Murray River, through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and is perfect for the visitor planning or travelling the Murray.

Shane Strudwick, Director of Discover Murray River said “go to http://m.murrayriver.com.au, select a town to find accommodation, houseboats, events, tours, attractions and much more. Click on accommodation for hotels, motels, bed and breakfast and caravan parks. Listings have a photo, contact details and a map. You can call that business with another click or find other Murray information.”

“Have you ever been in a situation where you need instant tourism information but can’t find it? Frustrating, isn't it? The most important aspect of our site is that we offer you exactly what you need, at precisely the moment you need it. Also, the fun-factor of researching a trip means you can quickly plan or share the experience with friends as they check it out on their mobile at the same time.”

“With the recent challenges in our region, the Murray River is proud to be on the cutting edge of this new communication and technology and there’s still fantastic holidays to be enjoy,” Shane said. “We reach out to people, and what better way to put visitor information at their fingertips than with mobile sites where visitors can access anywhere, anytime, particularly while they are travelling.”

The new mobile site was developed by Design Train, 2008 Small Business of the Year Champion Award-winners for Service. It has been perfectly integrated with the existing award-winning Murray River web site where content is managed by the whole community. The mobile site is intentionally designed for viewing on the smaller screens of mobile devices which ensures its bandwith is very, very small for low cost, yet very fast downloading.

The new version of the mobile site is designed to work on both new 3G mobile phones but more importantly works on the older 2G mobile phones. “Developments in mobile technology provide additional advertising opportunities for businesses while delivering information and services to visitors when they want and how they want it.” Shane says.

“In a world where online services and information are in high demand, we knew we had to make changes to provide more convenient travel planning experiences for our visitors,” said Shane.

dotMobi says there are 40 million active mobile web users in the United States alone and growing. “These statistics indicate the future importance and trend of mobile application development and for the Murray River region to remain competitive as a tourism destination we’ve taken a leading tourism marketing role in Australia.”

Currently the Murray River web site attracts over 720,000 visitors per year. The mobile site development is part of our goal to attract over 1 million visitors online by 2009/2010 and increase vistiation to this beautiful and unique Australian experience and destination.
