Loxton - The Big Pelican "The Big Pelican" rests permanently by the Loxton Riverfront Caravan Park, near the Lions Park playground, and can be viewed anytime. In 1979 the Loxton Aquatic Club members constructed, painted & papier-mache'd a huge pelican for the Aquatic Club Queen in the Loxton Mardi Gras. For the 1980 Mardi Gras, it was used on top of a houseboat for the river parade, and a few days later some pranksters floated it down the river on car tubes, which wrecked the papie-mache. In 1985, the original frame was remodelled and renovated by Peter Mangelsdorf with the help of community members and a group of High School students. It was done for Loxton's entrant in the Adelaide celebrations of the SA Jubilee 150 years, in 1985, and again used for the "Murray comes to town" fair in Adelaide in 1989. The pelican was used in Loxton Mardi Gras pageants from 1980 until it retired in 1992. The Loxton community centre since decided to fibreglass and restore it, with an axle, so that it can be moved during high rivers. The Big Pelican was unveiled on July 19th, 1998 by the 1998 Mardi Gras Queen.
