General Information

Echuca - Moama came into being in 1845 when James Maiden set up a punt service across the river on the Moama side and Henry Hopwood set up a punt and built an inn on the Echuca side.

The City of Echuca preserves its riverboat era and boasts the tag of Australia’s Paddlesteamer capital. Echuca, thanks to the business savvy of Henry Hopwood, became the railway terminal for the line from Melbourne and eventually this transformed Echuca into Australia's largest inland port. With over 80 motels and a large three-decker wharf Echuca is well prepared to cater for tourism. Today, much of the giant red gum wharf still stands and paddle steamers, old hotels and government buildings are other remnants of a once thriving riverboat town.

Moama is directly across the Murray River from Echuca. Moama became a large cattle market supplying meat to the gold-diggers and prospered until the gold dried up. Nearby are the Moira and Barmah forests for bush walking.

Echuca – Moama has a stunning climate combined with beautiful scenery. You can experience the Murray on a river cruise, hire a boat, swim, fish or even rent a houseboat for a longer stay. Echuca - Moama has a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and eateries.

Echuca – Moama plays host to numerous events throughout the year including Jazz-Food and wine festivals, Easter sporting carnivals, Opperman Race Weekend (cycling), Red Cross Murray Canoe Marathon, Southern 80 Club Marine Water Ski Race, Port Of Echuca Steam Heritage Festival and much more.

Major attractions include Paddleboats, Oz Maze, Kyabram Fauna Park, Port of Echuca, Sharps Penny Arcade Movie House, Golden Cow Tourist Centre, Dharnya Aboriginal Centre, Horse riding, World in Wax, Heritage Museums to name a few.
