LOXTON

Loxton is one of the larger towns on the Murray, situated attractively amid lawns and gardens on the southern side. It is 165 miles from Adelaide, has a District council area of 1,100 square miles, and a population of 6,500. Initially a farming and grazing area, Loxton is now a thriving irrigation town with a War Service Land Settlement Scheme, and private irrigation.

A wide variety of shopping facilities, a Tourist Office, a Community Hotel-Motel, two other Motels, one Caravan Park, and an Olympic Swimming Pool cater for Tourists, together with camping sites, and reserves, fishing boat hire service, river cruised, turf golf course, bowling greens and a local newspaper.

Loxton has much for visitors to admire and visit, above all its community spirit, with the unique Town Beautification Scheme, Loxton District Historical Village, an annual Mardi Gras Festival and Community Farm. And if you a bit peckish, why not drop into the Loxton Pizza Bar, which incorporates a Video store, an amusement and games parlor, and Dining facilities with some of the best Pizza and Takeaway food in the area accompanied by great service.  It is in the main street by the roundabout.

Much development to make the river-front area picturesque and attractive, has been done over the last two or three years, fishing is good, and bird life abounds.

Loxton is one of those unique country towns where welcoming community spirit still remains strong making your stay an extra special time to remember. Loxton’s recent title of South Australia’s Tidiest Town, with a Commendation in the Nationals, proves to visitors that Loxton is well worth the inclusion in any itinerary. Loxton is also known as the Garden city of the Riverland with its beautifully arranged gardens, flower beds and well kept main streets. The district of Loxton has numerous points of direct river access to 85 nautical kilometres of some of the most picturesque River settings on the Murray.

Situated at the entrance of the Loxton Riverfront Caravan Park is the “Tree of Knowledge” showing at a glance, the high river levels since 1956 on the trunk of this magnificent old river gum tree.

Also situated at the entrance of the Loxton Riverfront Caravan Park is the “Big Pelican” which was used as a float in the Loxton Mardi Gras Pageants until 1992 when it retired.  The area between the Tree of Knowledge and the Big Pelican, has 4 undercover electric barbecues, a playground, a kiosk, and a beautiful lawned area on the riverbank, ideal for a picnic.

Lock 4 Weir at Loxton is open 7 days for the public to view the waters of the mighty river Murray as it passes through one of the weir chambers.  BBQ facilities available in ideal picnic surroundings.
