MURRAY RIVER
REGIONS AND TOWNS
MILDURA

Visit Mildura, where you will drift, dream, discover.

Mildura  will overwhelm your senses. Its expanse of exciting landscapes is a many
layered tapestry of colours, textures, tastes and experiences. From meandering rivers
and lush farmland to vast tracts of red desert cratered with shimmering salt lakes, Mildura
is a place of such diversity it’s difficult to believe you can have it all in one holiday.

The region is equally renowned for its fantastic food, wine and cultural mix. Imagine
lunching on fine cuisine and wine in a chic riverside restaurant and that evening,
sleeping beneath a ceiling of stars in the middle of the great Australian outback. Soak
up the unique pioneering history of tiny Mallee towns surrounded by more than a half
a dozen national parks linked together in spring by a carpet of wildflowers.

All this is just an hour or half a day away and easily accessible from every direction.
Mildura is central to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra via a network of
major routes which are a fascination in themselves. Overlapping the borders of three
states, this enthralling area offers myriad experiences to suit every interest and budget.

Mildura was established originally as an American-style irrigation colony.
Alfred Deakin invited the Chaffey brothers, George and William, to develop
an irrigation system in the 1880's. In 1887 the first irrigation water was pumped
here from the Murray River.

Mildura is situated in the heart of Sunraysia on the banks of the Murray River and
is a very popular tourist destination. Mildura is renowned worldwide for it's produce of
high quality Golden Valencia and Navel oranges, sweet fleshy melons and dried fruits.

There is much to see and do in Mildura, and the magic of the Murray River is best
appreciated by experiencing it directly. The Murray can be experienced through
numerous professional Tour Operators or at your own pace aboard one of the
many Houseboats. The river can also be experienced by bicycle tours along it's
banks, rowing, waterskiing, swimming or fishing. Mildura offers a year-round calendar
of Festivals and Events for visitors of all ages.

Mildura township has a wide variety of accommodation options including over 50
Motels, Caravan Parks, Hotels, Houseboats, B&Bs and self contained holiday units.

Mildura is also becoming well known as a sport resort and boasts world class
tennis facilities, manicured bowling club greens, the Aerodrome Sports Complex,
quality golf courses and superb cricket pitches. Major sporting events include
the Tour of Sunraysia, the Mildura 100 Ski race, historic paddleboat racing and
the Mildura Balloon Festival.
