Food & Wine

Mildura is famous for its fresh produce, wine and fine foods. The lush irrigated land along the Murray combined with an abundance of sunshine and low humidity provide ideal growing conditions for all types of fruit and grains.

Murray valley Wines

Family barbecues are a treat.More than 60 percent of Australia's wine is produced along the Murray Valley with some of the best to be found in Mildura. Savour crisp whites, full bodied reds, fortified wines, ports and muscats. The area's wine history is celebrated each year at the beginning of November with four days of festivities at the Wine and Jazz Festival. The area's restaurants synthesise their best culinary inspirations for the occasion. If you can't wait until November, take your own tour of one of the richest wine producing regions in Australia with as many delicious food breaks as you can handle!

Where to Start

Vineyards that are internationally and nationally recognised have their home in this region. The first vines in the area were planted by the Chaffey brothers back in 1888 at Chateau Mildura. Today, these same soils still produce some of Australia's most coveted fortified wines and brandy at the renamed Mildara Blass Winery.

Stop at Capogreco winery for a unique Italian-style wine on picturesque Lake Hawthorn and visit Stanley Winery for a tour of one of Australia's largest wine producers. Encounter state-of-the-art palate pleasing wines at Alambie and the fresh spontaneous tastes of Wingara vintages. For an unrivalled and picturesque dining experience, make a date to visit Trentham Estate. A boutique winery on the banks of the Murray with fine food to match quality wine. Lindemans Karadoc, the largest winery in the southern hemisphere, will also offer the perfect complement to your meal from their extensive range of wines.

Every glass of wine will bring back memories of your day at the vineyards.Sunraysia - Foodbowl of the Murray

Along with wine, the Murray region offers a temperate climate perfect for fruit and grain production. The area has a history of dried fruit crops, which means you can enjoy the best sultanas, raisins and apricots Australia produces. You'll recognise Sunraysia for its quality fruit but you may not know that the area also produces almonds and pistachio nuts. Oranges, lemons, mandarins, tangelos and a wide variety of avocados are a healthy road-side break. Try the asparagus it's world class! You'll find plenty of produce that you may never have seen or tasted before. Be sure to taste them all.

Meals mum Would be Proud of

Mildura offers a unique dining experience. Meals have the variety and sophistication you would expect to find in any major city, with a difference. The ingredients are backyard fresh. The Italian influence is unmistakable with provincial Australian cuisine exciting those who like a simple spaghetti bolognaise to those who prefer modern risotto dishes teeming with seafood delicacies and enticing locally grown fresh vegetables. The full aroma of garlic and fresh herbs fills the air and the wines from the area make a perfect match.

The River Murray itself offers fresh yabbies and the famed Murray Cod. Try them in some of the region's contemporary dishes. A splendid range of restaurants, bistros and cafes cater to everyone s palette with al fresco dining a highlight. For the adventurous, sample the unique Australian cuisine featuring emu, crocodile and kangaroo. Or, take a trip on a paddleboat for an enjoyable dinner afloat.
