Wentworth - Where the rivers meet.

The junction of two great rivers.

The junction of the Murray and Darling rivers provide tranquillity, beautiful scenery, an abundance of modern water activities and the intensity of a past draped in history and intrigue.

Although the rivers are a focal point of the town, parks perfect for barbecues, richly contrasting scenery and the simplicity of a town still believing in good old fashioned hospitality are all part of Wentworth's appeal.

Pioneers of Prominence

While you're in Wentworth, be sure to investigate the awesome red Perry sandhills, geologically traceable to the Barkindji Aboriginal people and the Ice Age. The feeling of sand between your toes carries a whole new meaning when you plunge down ten hectares of rolling red sandhills for some great family fun!

The true Wentworth pioneers are the people who have made their homes there over the years. In 1956, the town was in danger of flooding as the two mighty rivers began to peak. For months, the townspeople worked day and night to construct a levee around Wentworth. It took more than thirty-five tractors to save the area from disaster. Today, that levee system still remains and keeps the town safe from floods.

You can visit Australia's only tractor monument in recognition of the town's spirit of teamwork and their achievement in saving the town. The Massey Ferguson is a town treasure.

Crime & Punishment

The Old Wentworth Gaol is fun for the kids.A certain hit for children of all ages is the Old Wentworth Gaol. Hide behind real prison bars for photos that are perfect for Show & Tell! The area was originally developed by the New South Wales government to house some of the most violent criminals of early Australia. A visit to the gaol shows the hard lives and extreme conditions of these prisoners amongst the beauty of the old pepper trees dating back to establishment of the gaol in 1879.

Take in the Rotary Museum's detailed historical account of the area. From replicas and fossils of Australian mega-fauna found in and around the Sandhills to the large paddlesteamer photo gallery chronicling the life & times' of a river port - the lifeblood of Wentworth. The museum should not be missed!

Where the Rivers Meet

A bird's-eye view of the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers.During your own exploration of the historic river town, enjoy a venture to Junctional Park to see the meeting of the rivers from the viewing tower. Explore the junction first hand on the nature path to the wildlife reserve between the rivers or walk right to the point of the island for the best view and the perfect picnic location!

Wentworth Today

Today, Wentworth still has many beautiful buildings representing the history of the town. St John's Anglican Church and Wentworth Courthouse, the Old Wentworth Gaol, the Post Office and the original Customs Officer's house are just some of the gems that reflect those early days. Wentworth is definitely worth a second and third look!
