150th Anniversary of Kow Plains Station, Cowangie
26 Jul 2009
In 1853 James “Picaninny†Smith of Yanac with his brother in laws William and David Little drove 250 head of cattle and some horses from Yanac to Kow Plains. James Smith described Kow Plains as a country of Pine rises. He applied for a 14 year lease but was refused; during the following 5 winters James Smith & the Little’s took cattle to Kow Plains and stayed there for 3-4 months.
The lease of Kow Plains Station an area of 5,720 acres was finally granted to James Smith on the July 3, 1859 for a licence fee of 20 Pounds; this was the last of the open Mallee country to be taken up for pastoral use.
The Kow Plains Committee will be celebrating this significant event which is not only the 150th anniversary of Kow Plains Station but it also commemorates the opening up of this area of the Mallee.
An open day will be held on Sunday 26 July 2009, a number of descendants of James Smith will be attending some will meet at Yanac and trace James “Picaninny†Smiths route through to Kow Plains. Plaques are to be erected where James Smith had his hut & stable before the first Homestead (now the Cookhouse) was built.
The Pinnaroo Baker will be baking at the Bakers oven and making pies & pizzas all made from local ingredients and damper and scones, these will all be delivered by a bakers truck to the Homestead. Several other bakers will be in attendance
