170TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MT BRYAN EXPEDITION COMMEMORATION FAIR

Date: Saturday 12th December

Venue: Morgan Riverfront Reserve

Time: 12 noon to evening
A re-enactment of the 1839 Murray River expedition will arrive in Morgan featuring the South Australian Sea Scouts on Saturday December 12 commemorating the 170th anniversary of this illustrious journey lead by Lt Col Sir George Gawler KH the 2nd Governor of the Province of South Australia accompanied by a party of 14 people including Captain Charles Sturt, Naval Lt William Jonathon Samuel Pullen, Henry Inman and an 18 year old boy – Henry Bryan.

The party set off in whale boats from Currency Creek on 26th November 1839 and arrived at the great bend in Morgan where the Burra Creek meets the Murray River on 10th December.

Gawler, Sturt, Inman, Craig and Bryan rode out northwards to Mt Bryan from the base camp to explore the surrounding countryside and as water supplies depleted the party divided leaving Gawler and Bryan to ride back to camp to find a rescue party.

With temperatures rising into the old century mark, it is believed an incredible and horrendous dust storm whipped up causing Bryan to veer off course losing sight of Gawler.

Live entertainment riverside at Morgan amidst towering gums and a superb lawned reserve, On water re-enactment by the South Australian Sea Scouts, Food stalls, amusements and launch of the Mt Bryan Expedition Heritage Trail and the annual Morgan Christmas Pageant.
