The Yard - Shaun Parker & Co

19 Mar 2021

THE YARD – Shaun Parker & Co, is an award-winning anti-bullying program that will be launching a live stream at 1:30pm, March 19 to showcase the performance for schools and educators around the country.

This self devised work was developed through a collaboration between one of Australia’s leading dance theatre practitioners, Shaun Parker and teenage performers from Captivate in Western Sydney. Drawing inspiration from William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” and its analysis of human behaviour, The Yard extrapolates these themes and breathes new life into them by way of the Australian school yard. Ultimately finding unity in the diversity of culture, gender and ethnicity that pulsate in “the school yard”, The Yard is taught with the tension and humour of conflicts played out every day even as it celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary.

With themes including bullying – both in real life and cyber bullying, peer pressure, social exclusion, and emotional resilience, The Yard is a compelling and physical dance theatre depiction of the bullying that continues to take place amongst young people around the country.

Performed by five young and diverse dancers, some of whom experienced bullying firsthand when starting school as migrants years ago, The Yard tackles sensitive issues by allowing students to be voyeurs into other peoples’ behaviour rather than feel lectured or questioned themselves.

The Live Stream is available across Australia from 1:30pm – 2:30pm March 19, 2021, except in Sydney where the show will be touring into schools.
