Welcome on board PS Ruby, river queen and 105 year paddle steamer legend of the outback. Departing from the Port of Wentworth at 5:30 pm on Saturday 28th January. As you are transported down the Darling River to Lock 10, the meeting place of Australia’s two greatest rivers, you will be entertained by our on board musicians on the Buffon Deck. You may be drawn forward, by the mesmerising action of the Robey Steam Engine, powering the giant paddle wheels quietly into the water. Perhaps the delicious aroma from the sizzling BBQ upfront, will waft back and catch your senses?
Exploration of the heritage paddlesteamer is encouraged, so follow the trail in your Visitor Guide to see how the early pioneers discovered the outback from the river. Intimate cabins featuring hand made quilts, lovingly crafted woodwork in the McKenzie Saloon and a breathtaking view from the top deck where you can visit the Captain in his wheelhouse, dwarfed by the wheel itself. If you’re lucky you may hear a yarn or two from the wise old rivermen who have many a tail to tell!
Be amazed by the simplicity of the controls in the wheelhouse. The wheel is connected directly to the rudder by a steel cable. There is a throttle that allows the captain to control the speed of the boat and a copper tube to bark orders down to the engineer! Running a paddlewheeler is a team effort.
Gazing back to the Murray river you can see fish jumping and the billabongs which are teaming with life, which could be more diverse than the jungles of the Amazon.
Time to get back to the music on the lower deck. Maybe you’ll even feel like a dance or two, as twilight draws in to mark the end of another beautiful day on the river.
