History

The Trentham Estate story

100 years ago Irish immigrant John Murphy dreamed of creating a better future through the fruits of his labor on new land opening up at Mildura. The reality was somewhat more challenging than the dream!

But in the decades since, a passion for viticulture and winemaking has been instilled into generations of the Murphy family – turning challenge into opportunity and values into principles has become the family mantra.

The first vines the Murphys planted at Trentham Estate 50 years ago flourished in rich red loam over limestone soils, nurtured by water from the magnificent Murray River.

From those humble beginnings, winemaking would become the family’s single focus.
Trentham Estate now produces a considered and select range of wines, celebrating love of life, the local lifestyle and the Murphys’ Irish and Italian heritage.

Spanning 60 hectares, vineyard varieties include Verdejo, Taminga, Chardonnay and Shiraz, as well as the newer Pinot Grigio, Vermentino, Maestri and Nebbiolo.

With stunning panoramic views of the Murray River, it was a natural progression to develop a cellar door and restaurant on the estate’s scenic cliffs.
