Mildura Palimpsest is a biennial visual arts event that invites artists to engage with the cultural and natural environment of the Mildura and Murray Darling region. Mildura Palimpsest is dedicated to high quality, critically engaged contemporary art in all forms. We aim to provide opportunities for real dialogue between local, national and international artisits, and across disciplines. Palimpsest, a parchment which has been partly erased and re-inscribed, evokes the marks made by human settlement on the land, the passage of time, presence and absence, and the web of inter-dependence connecting the natural and the cultural, the material and the immaterial. Mildura is a powerful location with a formidable history of engagement with the arts. Located near the junction of Australia’s mighty Murray and Darling Rivers and the border of three state boundaries, ancient songlines stretch across the desert, rivers and lagoons and inland to Lake Mungo World Heritage site. There is a raw confrontation between the past and the future, nature and culture embodied in this unique location. The past is not buried here but sketched across the surface of the earth where the future is in progress.
