Mildura Writers Festival

The Mildura Writers’ Festival brings together some of Australia’s best writers in an intimate, winter program of workshops, lectures and discussion forums with a largely community based audience.
Beginning in 1994 in Stefano de Pieri’s cellar restaurant, this event has evolved to be acclaimed to be among the finest literary festivals in the country, not only because of its literary pleasures, but also because of the talent it attracts and its atmosphere of conviviality – building upon the provincial Victorian winter, with late night discussions around wood fires, showcasing the local and regional gourmet food and wine. With such a reputation the Mildura Writers’ Festival is able to attract the best Australian writers including Nobel Laureates such as JM Coetze, renowned authors such as David Malouf and international stars such as Clive James.
Mildura Writers’ Festival recently added to its reputation as one of the finest literary festivals in the country with the announcement that National Living Treasure, Les Murray, had accepted the invitation to be Patron of the Festival. Festival Director, Helen Healy, who extended the invitation on behalf of the Committee was elated, “Les has been an intrinsic part of the Festival since it began in 1994 and his being invited to be patron was only natural but his acceptance places us firmly among the most prestigious literary events in the country and it catapults Mildura into the international arena to have a patron of such fameâ€
