Kyalite on the Wakool River, NSW, great for fishing...and more
Where all the rivers are fun...
About 1892 Henry Talbett established a ferry service on the Wakool River. It was common in those days and this business expanded into a shanty providing drinks, meals an accommodation to travellers.
In the mid 1850s the foundations to the original Wakool Hotel were laid on the banks of the Wakool River.
This building, of drop log construction, endured for almost 50 years. The existing hotel was constructed in the early 1900s.
Originally known as Wakool the district name was changed to Kyalite in the mid 1920s. while the meaning of Kyalite has been lost it is believed to have ben the name given to the Edward River by local Aboriginals.
With its famous pub at the hub, Kyalite is a small country centre of about 30 people.
To the recreational camper and fisherman Kyalite is known for its extensive State Forests and endless river systems. There are four major river, the Wakool, Edward, Murray and the Murrumbidgee only a few minutes drive from the front door of the pub.
The Edward and Wakool Rivers enjoy a reputation as the best Murray Cod waters in Australia. The Murray River is approximately 6km and closest town on the Murray to Kyalite is Tooleybuc between Robinvale and Swan Hill.
The Kyalite Pub
The Kyalite is a small pub with a big reputation.
Wherever you are, try it.
Ask the bushie or the townie, in Bendigo, or Renmark, Alice Springs or Mungerannie. Have beer in The Old Royal at Broken Hill, The Globe at Ballarat, or the Parap in Darwin or just strike up a conversation with the bloke in the street, it's a fair bet you'll find a mate who has had a beer at Kyalite.
A bush pub with character and feeling. It has been the welcome home and stopover for the tough hardy men and women who pioneered this country. Kyalite has seen the good times an bad, the droughts, the bumper crops, the depressions an the booms.
Ken and Vicki became the proud owners in 1989. Ever since has been an on going restoration program. As near as practical the hotel has been restored to its original appearance.
Today customers can relax with an ice cold drink and 'read' the pub walls. You will find a full photo history of the pub, complimented with hunting weapons and tools of trade used by our original Bushmen.
The Pub was built before daily newspapers, before radio or TV. Before customers watched live news and sporting events on the other side of the world. Imagine what the Kyalite's first customers would have said if they were told this would come to pass.
