23,000 acres of South Australian pioneering history
Portee Station provides guests with four and a half star accommodation on a 23,000 acre sheep grazing and wool growing property. The Victorian Homestead, built in 1873 on the floodplain of the River Murray, is in the wetlands, allowing the abundant birdlife that inhabit the slow flowing stream and age old rivergums, to provide an educational experience in a unique, tranquil, and restful setting.
Portee is now managed as a shining example of nature based tourism, joining primary production, commercial enterprise, and the natural environment, to sustain the features of each.
The development of Portee as a tourist destination provides guests with “experience” opportunities, combined with comfortable accommodation. The Station demonstrates, in some part, the atmosphere of early Australian Station life.
With proud pioneering ties dating back to the early 1840s and to famous explorer Edward John Eyre, this historical rural sheep station is a great place to experience the Murray.
On the banks of a beautiful billabong, the calming water views and broad bushland are relaxing and reinvigorating.
The historic 1873 homestead provides elegant and enchanting accommodation and luxurious living standards that include eight bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and evaporative airconditioning throughout, along with the original shearers’ quarters with two fully self contained residences. This homestead is renovated with a modern magic mixed with the charm and charisma that only the years gone by can provide.
Portee Station’s graceful facilities and alcohol licence easily caters for national and international tourism, weddings and functions for those wanting of a taste of a rustic rural Australia. There is an eco flavour found throughout the whole Station. It’s proud history of sheep grazing, high levels of shearing activity and creation of 16.5 micron quality wool, have also made this property a South Australian icon in its own right.
This picturesque property contains 6km of absolute Murray River frontage, lone sandy beaches, rustic shearing shed, rows of hundred year old river gums, traes of ancient aboriginal activity, extensive wildlife and bountiful birdlife. Boating, swimming, fishing, fresh country air and clean starry nights are all on offer at peaceful Portee.
Its 1200 metre air strip and close proximity, just 9km to Blanchetown, around one hour by car to the Barossa Valley and approximately two hours to Adelaide, make this station one of the most accessible and conveniently located in Australia.
