Early September 2008 myself and my partner decided to celebrate our anniversary by heading away to Mannum for the weekend. Taking off on a Friday night straight from work, cruising through the Adelaide Hills on our way to Mannum was strangely calming and really set the relaxed tone for the rest of the trip. We decided to stay at Riverview Rise Retreats. This wasn’t exactly the cheapest option – but as soon as you get your keys and step into your retreat you realise that you’ve made a great decision – it’s simply amazing! The views are fantastic whilst maintaining a good amount of privacy, and the rooms themselves are absolute luxury. The large screen tv hanging off the wall facing the king size bed made it too easy to simply laze the day away. Everything just seemed to gel together, from the spa to the beautiful kitchen, to create a perfect place to share a romantic weekend.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the chef (Meredith I believe her name was, but don’t quote me on that) who cooked us a five course meal in front of our eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted anything so good in my life! From the cocktails to kick things off to the chocolate pudding to top it all off, everything was cooked to perfection. Both my partner and myself still bring up that meal from time to time – my taste-buds haven’t quite been the same since :). A seriously good experience.

Throughout the weekend we really didn’t get out of the retreat too much, it was so cozy and beautiful that it was a bit of a chore to leave. We did, however, make it down to the beautiful Mary Anne Reserve to sit and enjoy the calm, natural beauty of the place and went for a treck to the Mannum waterfalls. One tip – if you’re there to see the waterfall and not to go on a hike, don’t park at the first carpark! We later realised that there’s another carpark much closer to the falls – probably a good thing we found out afterwards otherwise we wouldn’t have stretched our legs, the whole weekend had put us in that much of a lazy mode!

I’d definitely recommend Riverview Rise Retreats, I doubt there are many places in South Australia (or Australia for that matter) that can match this experience for a couple (note: couple – not the place for kids).
