Bob Irwin recently stayed at the Mannum Caravan Park along with Tony Greenwood from Peel Zoo WA and Bali Zoo. Bob is supporting efforts by the Wombat Awareness Organisation to raise at least $3 million to buy Land of Portee sheep station, on the banks of the Murray about 90 minutes drive from Mannum, to establish a wombat rescue and research centre.

The aim of the Wombat Awareness Organisation is to revolutionize public perception of the wombat, promoting welfare and conservation of the species. The Wombat Awareness Organisation is unique as it offers a holistic approach to wombat conservation by offering a 24 hour rescue service, groundbreaking rehabilitation techniques, community work, education and research. Australia’s only ‘Wombat Intensive Care Unit’ is the base for this mammoth project and relies on donations for the care of these unique little Aussies Bridgette and her partner Frank have been tirelessly working to ensure no more wombats are harmed and to set up this sanctuary.

Having spoken with Bob and Tony, Kirsty Macgregor from Mannum Caravan Park feels this is a great natural tourism opportunity which will not only raise awareness of the wombats and the fantastic work currently being done, but it will be another reason for people to visit our great Region. It is fantastic to see support for these and other worthwhile projects have come from within our own caravan industry Nationally through Go See Australia website and CRVA” we love this country”.

Bridgette and Frank have given up jobs at Australias Zoo to help these iconic creatures. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all help.
